The Monday Motivator | On Dusting Yourself Off

January 7, 2019

The Monday Motivator is a series meant to motivate, encourage, inspire and provide advice on real life stuff.*

"Pour yourself a drink, put on some lipstick and pull yourself together." -Elizabeth Taylor

This is one of my favorite quotes. Mostly because it's a beautiful reminder that we can overcome anything, but bright lipstick and a margarita can help.

Today's Monday Motivator is about dusting yourself off. I felt inspired to write this one after something that happened to me on New Year's Day, actually. As I stood in the mirror with tear-filled eyes, I whispered "you're fine, you're fine, you're fine." I pulled myself back together, and although I laid low for the rest of the day, I got over it.

Wouldn't life be so much easier if we could be bulletproof? If the things people did or the way they made us feel couldn't hurt us?

Well, since that's IMPOSSIBLE, I figured I'd chat about the art of dusting yourself off.

First of all, it's not an easy thing to do. It's not something you can do immediately or even overnight. It's something that takes time, and a lot of self-love. Sure, I may have told myself "you're fine" on New Year's Day, but all week it has been on my mind. Dusting yourself off takes time because we're NOT bulletproof.

We all have our own suitcases of self-doubts and insecurities that we carry around with us; that's just a fact. And because of this, we are unable to dust ourselves off quickly. When something happens that hurts us, that little bag of insecurities unpacks itself one by one to make us feel small and sad. And waaaay at the bottom of that bag is the duster; the tool we need to pull ourselves back together.

I know personally that dusting yourself off is a difficult task. But I also know that there will be PLENTY of times in life where it is necessary to move forward. What it takes is knowing in that time of hurt, you are bigger than the pain. You will overcome it because you are STRONG.

You are allowed to feel sad and hurt and mad. But then you will dust yourself off and OVERCOME.

So take all of the time you need. But then go look in the mirror, give yourself a smile and knock em' dead.

I see you,
