My Winter Skincare Routine

January 10, 2019

Hello lovelies! I've come down with ANOTHER cold, and although it's wearing me out, I wasn't going to let it stop me from spending time with you this week!

You may remember my skincare routine post from last April- in fact, it was one of my most popular posts! Since my readers seemed to find it so beneficial, I've decided to put together my WINTER skincare routine.

As I've mentioned in the past, my skin is very dry and very sensitive. This means I have to change up my routine a bit during the winter months because my skin dries out from the cold and needs a lot more attention. I've thrown a few new products into my routine recently and have been loving the results, so I wanted to share my routine AND the products with you. If your skin is looking dry and tired from the harsh cold, you may want to change it up as well!

Here's my current winter routine:

MORNING
WASH FACE
One of the steps that hasn't changed in my skincare routine for the winter is washing my face every morning with Aveeno's Clear Complexion Foaming Cleanser. It's a super gentle formula that works to prevent any breakouts without drying out skin. I've tried different facial cleansers, but I always go back to this one because it leaves my skin feeling refreshed and clean with a smooth finish. I rarely get any breakouts because of it.

MOISTURIZE
I started moisturizing both in the A.M. and the P.M. because the cold weather made my skin extremely flaky and it was NOT CUTE with makeup. I was previously using a Pond's dry skin moisturizer, but it didn't seem to be helping. I switched to Neutrogena's Oil-Free Daily Sensitive Skin Facial Moisturizer. It's unscented, goes on smooth and dries quickly without any tackiness or residue left behind. I love how it evens out the look of my skin and clears out flakiness. It also is a moisturizer that DOES NOT have SPF, which is tough to find these days. Moisturizers with SPF can dry out skin, so I avoid those.

APPLY MAKEUP
After I wash my face and moisturize, I apply my makeup. I'm still all about Neutrogena's Mineral Sheers Powder Foundation because it's a clean makeup that doesn't clog my pores and literally works to make skin healthier. For the winter, I keep it simple by applying mascara, blush and filling in my brows. Nothing too crazy.

EVENING
REMOVE MAKEUP
I don't know about you, but by the time I get home from work, my eyes are burning from my makeup mixing with the dry air. I can't wait to wash it off. Since I don't typically wash my face for the night until I shower, I have been removing my eye makeup using The Body Shop's Camomile Gentle Eye Makeup Remover. I apply it to a cotton ball and it quickly removes all of my mascara. The gentle formula doesn't hurt my eyes or dry out my skin. It's the best makeup remover I've ever used! And if you're lucky, you might find a bottle of it at Marshall's like I did!

WASH FACE
When it's time to wrap up my day, I take a shower and wash my face using Neutrogena's Oil-Free Acne Wash. As I mentioned in my previous skincare post, I've been using this stuff since high school. It's super easy on my skin and keeps my face clear of blemishes. It washes away that good ole' daily dirt buildup and any remaining makeup.

MOISTURIZE
Before bed, I moisturize my face again, but this time I use Neutrogena's Deep Moisture Night Cream. This is another new product I'm trying and I'm honestly obsessed with it. It's a thicker, almost jelly-like consistency that glides on smooth. The jar seems small at first, but trust me when I say a little goes a long way; you don't have to use much to get full coverage. I love that this night cream works while I sleep to hydrate my tired skin. It also smells AMAZING.

I've been trying out Soap & Glory's Puffy Eye Attack Hydragel. By applying it under your eyes before bed, it's supposed to reduce puffiness and the appearance of dark circles. I haven't noticed a big difference with this product yet, but I'm still giving it a chance. So far, I would say it is not worth the money.

Finally, I moisturize my hands before bed as well so the lotion can work its magic all night without any hand-washing interruptions. Recently, I've been using Aveeno's Positively Nourishing Calming lotion. Aveeno's lotions are my favorite formula because they always hydrate my dry hands. This lotion does the same, except the lavender and chamomile scent is SO. DANG. GOOD. Trust me, you'll be smelling your hands all day with this stuff.

*****

I think we get stuck in a mindset that only summer is hard on our skin because of the heat and sweat and sun, but don't forget winter can be really hard on your skin, too. Frigid temps, windy days and hot showers dry out skin and cause a whole new set of issues. If you stay on top of answering the needs of your skin through your daily routine, you can kiss dry, flaky winter skin goodbye!
