You already know I love fall. But truth be told: I hate the transition.
Here in Illinois, the weather is STILL in the 90s. We had a brief teaser of fall weather before resuming our typical humid September. So how exactly can I switch my wardrobe to the next season when it's still way too hot?
I'll be honest with you- it's hard. This is something I struggle with every. single. year. Picking out outfits in September/early October feels like a chore for me. I get to the point where I'm completely OVER my summer pieces, but still have to make them work somehow.
Although it always will be extremely frustrating for me, here are some tips I've learned over the years that help channel fall in outfits that are still appropriate for the temps:
LET YOUR BAG DO THE TALKING
First things first: The easiest way to sprinkle some fall into your daily outfits is through your handbag. My clothes/shoes may still say summer, but my bag doesn't have to! Opt for a neutral toned leather bag, like brown or black, or to add some color, go for a burgundy or deep orange. I love carrying a simple leather purse in a fall shade as soon as September hits.
WEAR FALL COLORS IN SUMMER PIECES
Although your pieces still need to be "summer friendly," the colors can really make a difference. You obviously don't want to wear that palm leaf printed dress when summer ends, but any colors like mustard yellow, olive green, apple red, maroon, black, camel brown, etc. can be repurposed for use from summer to fall. Your favorite olive green sundress can still make a fall debut with the right accessories.
THERE IS POWER IN ANKLE PANTS
It probably doesn't feel right to be wearing shorts in September, but hey, you do what you gotta do. If you are SO DONE with shorts season, capris and ankle pants should be your next go-to. I love my ankle jeans paired with booties, but when it's still too warm for boots, they look equally as awesome with sandals and backless mules. Plus, they are more breathable than skinny jeans.
WHEN IN DOUBT, DENIM JACKET
A denim jacket is the ultimate wardrobe staple no matter the time of year, but I really gravitate toward mine in the fall. It's easy to throw one on over a "summer" dress or blouse to make it feel more fall casual. They're also perfect for nights when the temperature gets chilly. If you don't already have one, add it to your shopping list ASAP.
TAKE ADVANTAGE OF DRESSES/SKIRTS
I love to wear dresses and skirts, but I always get disappointed when it gets too cold to wear them without tights. (I really hate tights.) This transition period is the perfect time to wear fall skirts and dresses because you can enjoy them with your bare legs. Suede dresses and denim skirts are your fall friends during this time- take advantage!

I have my fingers crossed that we are close to the end of the summer/fall transition, but in the meantime, these tips and tricks should help you get through it!
Ready, set, fall,
