How to: Make outfit inspiration a reality

November 15, 2016

I officially love fall most of all, fashionistas!

There's just something about the changing of seasons that inspires me to do great things when putting together outfits. I think a lot of it has to do with having new pieces to wear, but the changing color palette and the world outside plays a large role as well.

Ever had a total lack of inspiration? Although that's not currently where I'm at, it tends to happen a lot as a season nears its end, but a new one has yet to begin.

Whether I am feeling super creative- putting looks together like a chef making a favorite recipe, or I'm in a total fashion slump- with no outfit ideas whatsoever, one of my greatest tricks is to constantly be looking for outfit inspiration from others.

It's easy to scavenge outfit inspo these days. With outlets like Pinterest and Instagram, you can consistently be bombarded with #ootd's that you wished belonged in your closet.

But why not make your wishes come true? Too easily we come to the conclusion that just because another blogger/fashionista/girl boss is wearing an outfit, it's off limits to us. It could potentially be because of cost, or you might think, "I could never pull that off."

I am here to tell you that, GIRL, you can TOTALLY pull that off! And with some of my tips, you can afford to pull it off, too!

The outfit I'm breaking down here today is a perfect example of that. Last week,  I saw an outfit on one of my favorite bloggers, Sazan Hendrix. (If you haven't checked out her beauty/fashion/lifestyle blog, get on it!) I LOVED the look for fall. It's the perfect combo of denim, flannel and some other great pieces.

I was so obsessed with it that I knew I had to recreate it, STAT!

The great thing about "recreation" is that it is not "replication." I don't have to go out and buy those exact pieces, but I can still make it look almost identical with pieces I already have in my closet.

So here's how I made it happen:

First, I started with the bottoms. I recently purchased these black distressed skinnies by Belle + Sky at JCPenney. They were only $15, thanks to some awesome coupons!

I worked my way up from there. Instead of a white tee, I opted for this C9 by Champion graphic tank that says "adventure." I recently found it at Target on clearance for $8.

Next came the flannel button-up. My vintage red plaid flannel from the Gap was a Goodwill find last season for only $4.99.

My denim jacket, which also happens to be my FAV, is from Old Navy. I found it last year on clearance for $18. I love the distressed pockets, the length and just the overall casual-ness of this piece. It fit perfectly over the flannel.

To top it off, I added this slouchy grey knit beanie with the brown puffball embellishment. It's so cozy! A $5 find at the Target dollar spot this year. Go grab one for yourself before they sell out!

The shoes I picked are Sam and Libby for Target tan ankle combat boots. They are nice and simple to compliment the rest of this earthy look. I found these at Goodwill for $4.99, plus I also scored the same pair in black!

I know the original outfit from Sazan did not include a bag, but I've been dying to use this new backpack purse I picked up at Marshalls. It's so much fun with the gold hardware and little dog! This bag was $29.99, but seeing that backpack handbags are a current hot trend, I can use this one for more than just this outfit.

There you have it! Not necessarily identical, but still achieving a similar, casual fall look with a few additions (for less). Follow me on Pinterest and Instagram for more looks to get inspired by.

It's way easier than you think to recreate looks you love. Why have that Pinterest board labeled "dream closet?" Label it "outfit inspiration," so the next time you are trying to put something together, you can use it as a reference to make your own version of that popular street style look.

You are so fierce,
